Laser Resurfacing
Laser resurfacing is a relatively new treatment for reducing facial wrinkles and skin irregularities, such as blemishes or acne scars.
The technique directs short, concentrated pulsating beams of light at irregular skin. Laser skin resurfacing removes skin very precisely, layer by layer. This popular procedure is known by several other names, including lasabrasion, laser peel or laser vaporization.
If you have fine lines or wrinkles around the eyes, mouth or on the forehead, scars from acne, or non-responsive skin after a facelift, then you may be a good candidate for laser skin resurfacing.
If you have active acne or if you have very dark skin, you may not be a candidate. This technique is also not recommended for stretch marks. Patients should seek out surgeons with documented training and experience in laser skin resurfacing.
The two types of lasers most commonly used in laser resurfacing are carbon dioxide (CO2) and erbium. Each laser vaporizes superficial, damaged skin cells and both reduce the risk for the patient because they limit the amount of heat absorbed by the skin.
Laser is a controlled light source energy that is used to reach of precise depth of penetration in the skin. It vaporizes or damages the superficial layer of skin or scar tissue removing the outer layer of skin. In the healing process, the patient gets a very youthful and rich appearance with new skin which is softer, smoother, and lighter.
Laser resurfacing removes the top layer of skin where the skin has been sun-damaged, becomes wrinkled, develops crows’ feet, develops smoker’s lines, or is scarred by acne. Laser resurfacing takes care of these superficial abnormalities of the skin.
The surgery can be done on an outpatient basis with general anesthesia or with topical anesthesia, depending on the areas involved. You may return to your home the same day with pain medication and cold packs for the face. You will be followed up at the office.
Initially, after the first treatment, there will be swelling within the first week. Rest and cold compresses are advised. You may need to wear a facial garment, wrap, or protective layer of ointment over the treated areas. The pink color or red color of the skin which is the new skin usually will continue to lighten over a period of several months, and so you have to avoid sun exposure for at least 6 months, or use make-up or sunscreen to prevent sun damage.
Laser resurfacing is a safe procedure. It may cause some skin lightening, but, with time, usually the color improves.
